Florida employment lawyer, Rod Smith is of special counsel to Avera & Smith and was the State Attorney of the Eighth Judicial Circuit from 1993 until the end of 2000 when he was elected State Senator serving the citizens of North Florida. Rod graduated from the University of Florida College of Law in 1975 and was admitted to the Florida Bar the same year. He has served as an adjunct professor at Santa Fe Community College and currently is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida College of Law. He is a frequent lecturer at various seminars through the state and has been a guest commentator for "Court TV".
Rod has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency; the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Professional Firefighters; the Gainesville Sun "Person of the Year" in 1994 in the category of public safety; Harry S. Truman "Buck Stops Here" award; Champion of Justice award from the North Central Florida Police Benevolent Assn.; and many other awards for public service. Rod's practice focuses in areas of labor and employment law, agricultural law, trial practice and provides counsel in select criminal cases. Prior to being elected State Attorney, Smith was listed in the publication "Best Lawyer in America". While State Attorney, Smith was recognized nationally as one of the nations preeminent prosecutors by the Association of Capital Litigators.
